Tokyo Gendai recently announced a shift in dates for its next edition in 2025.
Instead of taking place in July, as it has for its first two editions, the art fair will return next year to the Pacifico Yokohama convention center about an hour south of central Tokyo on September 12 to September 14, with its VIP preview day on September 11.
The VIP email on July 10 acknowledged the new dates in the fall “will mean a more comfortable climate for visitors and galleries”.
Co-founder Magnus Renfew told ARTnews editor-in-chief Sarah Douglas at the fair earlier this month that scheduling Tokyo Gendai for July, “when weather in Tokyo is extremely hot and humid, is a hindrance” to attracting more American and European visitors.

This year’s dates for the fair also coincided with the sixth edition of Monaco Art Week.
The second edition of Tokyo Gendai saw major collectors like Takeo Obayashi, Shunji and Asako Oketa, Yoshiko Mori, Jenny Wang and Simian Wang attend VIP day, as well as robust sales for Pace Gallery and BLUM, both of which have branches in Tokyo. Visitors came from more than 40 countries to see offerings from 69 galleries.
Tokyo Gendai is part of the Art Assembly’s group of fairs in the Asia Pacific region, with the other two being ART SG in Singapore in January and Taipei Dangdai in Taipei, Taiwan in May. This year’s edition of Tokyo Gendai received support from the Japan Tourism Agency, Agency for Cultural Affairs Government of Japan, and City of Yokohama Sports, Culture, as well as the Dynamic City Development Bureau.
